What to expect

Hidden deep in the Yucatan jungle lies the ancient Maya city of Coba. On this cultural trip, you'll tour its ruins and discover the enigmatic Maya heritage, see a great pyramid, meet local villagers and swim in a sacred cenote. Valentina, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Coba was once a huge city, home to about 50,000 people at its height. Coba means “ruffled waters” because the city was located on two breezy lagoons. It's not as well known as Chichen Itza, so it tends to be quieter and more intimate to move around.'

We arrive early at Coba so that you can explore the site in the cooler hours and avoid the crowds. It's one of the more recently excavated sites in the Yucatan and was once one of the Maya's most important cities. Highlights include the Great Nohoch Mul Pyramid, that stands at more than 40 metres high, and stelae that show the powerful female leaders of ancient Coba. Valentina adds, ‘Coba's main pyramid is the biggest in the region. It's the hub of ancient paved “white roads” that fan out through the site. There are more than 50 of these roads in and around Coba. They were used for trade and communication.'

Next up is a visit to a Maya community, where villagers still live without running water or electricity. You'll meet some of the locals and find out more about their lives and traditions. Experience a Maya ceremony before enjoying a traditional lunch in a nearby restaurant. Finish off the day with a refreshing swim in a nearby cenote.

NOT DISABLED FRIENDLY This trip was sold to us disable friendly On the bus to find the first 4 rows not being used next having to walk over a car park that was full of rocks, then to walk uphill over rocks and tree roots to get to the tut tuts, which was really good. Then to the blessing, no way I cold walk that , I tried, the terrain was too rough again. Next the cenote a circular wooden staircase that was slippy when wet. I didn’t bother with the village, my walker and me had enough by then

The reason i gave safety a 5. It was not made clear when the experience was explained and book that there is a steep spiral slippery staircase leading from the serfice down to the cenote water level. This made this part of the experience impossible for some people to enjoy.

We all enjoyed our day to Coba very much, the guide was fun and knowledgeable, he really made the day interesting and it all flowed nicely. The only slight disappointment for us was the Cenote at the end, we had no idea it was so far underground and down a very narrow spiral staircase. It might have been nice to know this before hand so we could’ve prepared ourselves.

The Coba Ruins were good, the three wheel taxi. The free lunch was traditional and tasted good, however we are suffering upset stomachs the day after. The cenote swim was a different experience, not to bothered about the Shayman or the way traditional Mayans live. Although everything was included we should have been told to take around 1000 pesos to alternatively buy other drinks and souvenirs

We don’t go on this trip as after going on another trip to the Tulúm ruins we realised it would be a similar experience. I think we could of had better advice on this from the rep. Resort were helpful in allowing us to swap the experience to another. However 9 days later I am still waiting for the refund to be processed and getting no response from resort. Very concerned.
