The adventure begins at the break of dawn with a journey to experience the wonder of Chichen Itza, a UNESCO-listed ancient Maya city. Then, wind down with a swim in a natural underground cenote cave. Hugo, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The early start is worth it – we'll arrive first thing in the morning to experience the magic of the ruins in the soft sunlight and beat the heat'.A guided tour of the ruined city reveals the stories of this remarkable site. It's not hard to imagine the daily lives of the community that lived here and built these impressive monuments. After the guided tour, enjoy free time to make the most of exploring this archaeological treasure trove as you wish. Hugo adds, ‘This ancient city isn't just about admiring the grandeur of El Castillo, but also about feeling the pulse of the Maya civilization that thrived here centuries ago. Don't miss the Great Ball Court—imagine the echoes of the past as players competed in this very spot.'Next, you'll be whisked away to Cenote Tsukán. Things to do in Riviera Maya / Playa del Carmen

With white-sand beaches bathed by tropical bath-warm waters and an impressive collection of Maya archaeological sites, the Riviera Maya is a winner. Located just south of Cancun, it’s an ideal destination if you want to combine sun, sea, nature and culture. With historic sites such as clifftop Tulum, the world-famous Chichén Itzá complex and the coastal resort of Playa del Carmen, you won't be bored here for a minute. Top six things to do in the Riviera Maya: 1. Admire Chichén Itzá An excursion to Chichén Itzá is a must when staying in the Riviera Maya. Located deep in the jungle of the Yucatan peninsula, it’s one of the best-preserved Maya sites of all. The impressive Kukulcan pyramid, El Caracol observatory and the Temple of the Warriors are all examples of the Maya’s engineering skills. While the Tzompantli, a wall covered in skull carvings, was used to display the conquests of state or other sacrificial victims. 2. Explore Tulum North of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve are the ruins of the Maya city of Tulum. One of Mexico's most important archaeological sites, it’s located on a 12-metre-high cliff, from which there are Insta-perfect views over the coastline and the Caribbean. El Castillo pyramid, the Temple of the Frescoes and the Temple of the Descending God are the most popular attractions. And to round off your visit, why not enjoy a dip on the beach or in one of the nearby cenotes. 3. Take an excursion to Isla Holbox Holbox Island is 40km long and 36 of those kilometres are sandy beaches. Floating in the Caribbean just to the north of Cancun, it makes for a great day trip. With a bit of luck, you’ll spot dolphins during the crossing. Afterwards, you can explore Holbox town, an easy-going kite surfing mecca, and its surrounding countryside by golf cart – it’s the only mode of transport allowed on the island. 4. Try out some water activities Snorkelling, sailing, diving or jet-skiing – the Riviera Maya is all in on water activities. The underwater world in this part of the Caribbean Sea is particularly colourful and varied. You can swim among turtles and tropical fish year-round and, between June and September, with whale sharks. And if you prefer to take it easy, there’s always a relaxing catamaran cruise to Isla Mujeres. 5. Have fun at Xcaret Eco Park Just south of Playa del Carmen is Xcaret Eco Park, an archaeological adventure park. Boasting more than 50 natural and cultural attractions that help you to be at one with nature. It’s fun for the whole family. And as well as thrilling activities, you’ll get to learn about Maya culture. Attractions and activities include jungle trails, an underground river, scuba diving, snorkelling with nurse sharks, a Maya village with folk music and dancing, and much more. 6. Visit Playa del Carmen One of the top playgrounds of the Caribbean, Playa del Carmen has world-class hotels, hopping nightlife and a very enticing beach. If you fancy poking around boutiques, savouring an ice cream or just watching the world go by, Fifth Avenue is the place to be. While over at Paseo del Carmen Shopping Mall, you’ll find all the famous brands. For a selfie, the Portal Maya gateway to the sea at Fundadores Park is very popular with Instagrammers.
